Artist of the Month: Fiona Apple
This month's featured, beloved artist is the one and only Fiona Apple.
What a fucking powerhouse.
She has transformed immense personal suffering and frustration with systemic oppression into cathartic art that will continue to positively affect people for generations. She has the courage to live from her heart, expose her vulnerabilities in a conscious way, and channel her experience into something of service. She had -- and probably still has -- many critics, yet she continues to share the truth of her heart.
I will let Fiona's magnificence and potency speak for itself by sharing some of her quotes:
"It pisses me off to think we’re conditioned to push away bad feelings and think anything that’s uncomfortable is to be avoided. When things are really bad nowadays, I recognize the value in it because it’s me filling my quota — it’s going to make my joy more intense later."
"I’m such an incredibly, stupidly sensitive person that everything that happens to me, I experience it really intensely… When you feel things deeply and you think about things a lot and you think about how you feel, you learn a lot about yourself."
"It’s my duty not to crumble and close off. I’ve gotten this far because of my willingness to make myself vulnerable."
"Well, the worst has happened and I’m fine. Now I feel like whatever I can do, no one can hurt me. I cannot be violated, I cannot be humiliated, I cannot be disregarded. I cannot be disrespected. I respect myself and believe in what I’m doing, no one can touch me."
"Through the media, we’ve established this standard of what every human being should look up to: somebody who always looks right; who always has the right to light on their face; never has bags under their eyes; never says anything inappropriate… I want to change things, I want to be like the patron saint of reality."
